Description

This classic Amish coffee cake is soft, buttery, and layered with warm cinnamon sugar—perfect with a morning coffee or as a comforting dessert.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup milk

1 egg

2 teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

⅓ cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons cold butter (cut into small pieces)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or line with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg, then mix in the milk until combined.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.

Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

In a small bowl, mix cinnamon and sugar for the topping. Sprinkle over the batter. Dot with pieces of cold butter.

Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

Best served warm with a cup of coffee or tea.

Can be doubled and baked in a 9×13-inch pan—adjust baking time as needed.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Add a powdered sugar glaze for a sweeter finish.
