Description

A soft and moist apple cake topped with buttery crumbs and finished with a warm cinnamon apple drizzle—this comforting dessert is perfect for fall or any time of year.

Ingredients

Cake:

1½ cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp salt

¾ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

½ cup sour cream

2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and chopped (Granny Smith preferred)

Crumb Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp salt

½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

½ cup brown sugar, packed

¼ cup granulated sugar

Cinnamon Apple Drizzle:

1 tbsp unsalted butter

½ cup brown sugar, packed

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tbsp milk

Pinch of salt

Instructions

Preheat Oven:
Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9-inch baking pan or line with parchment.

Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

Cream Butter and Sugar:
In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).

Add Eggs and Vanilla:
Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla.

Combine Batter:
Alternate mixing in dry ingredients and sour cream until just combined. Fold in chopped apples.

Prepare Crumb Topping:
Mix flour, cinnamon, salt, sugars, and cold butter until crumbly with pea-sized chunks. Sprinkle evenly over batter.

Bake:
Bake 55–65 minutes, until golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 15–20 minutes, then transfer to a rack.

Make Drizzle:
In a saucepan, melt butter, then stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, milk, and salt. Cook 2–3 minutes until smooth.

Finish Cake:
Drizzle sauce over cooled cake before serving.

Notes

Best Apples: Use tart apples like Granny Smith for balance.

Texture Tip: Don’t overmix the batter to keep the cake light and fluffy.

Crumb Topping: Use cold butter for the best crumble.

Serving Ideas: Pair with ice cream, whipped cream, or hot coffee/tea.
