Description

A rich and savory twist on classic meatloaf, packed with French onion flavor and topped with gooey, melted Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

1 ½ lbs (680g) ground beef

1 packet (1 oz) French onion soup mix

1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1/4 cup milk

1 cup shredded Swiss cheese, divided

1 small onion, finely diced or caramelized

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment.

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, soup mix, breadcrumbs, eggs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, half of the shredded Swiss cheese, and diced (or caramelized) onion. Mix until just combined—don’t overwork.

Form into a loaf shape on the prepared baking sheet.

Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

During the last 5 minutes of baking, top the loaf with the remaining Swiss cheese.

Once cheese is melted and bubbly, remove from oven. Let rest 5–10 minutes before slicing.

Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.

Notes

For extra French onion flavor, use caramelized onions instead of raw.

Pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, roasted green beans, or crusty bread.

Swap Swiss cheese for Gruyère for a more traditional French onion profile.

Use a meatloaf pan for a more uniform shape, but baking freeform gives crispier edges.
