Description

Flaky puff pastry wrapped around savory sausage and sweet caramelized onions. These golden sausage rolls are perfect for parties, snacks, or cozy appetizers.

Ingredients

1 tbsp olive oil

2 medium onions, thinly sliced

1 tsp brown sugar

1 tsp balsamic vinegar

1 lb (450g) ground sausage meat

1 tsp dried thyme

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Salt and black pepper, to taste

1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Caramelize onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook for 10 minutes. Stir in brown sugar and balsamic vinegar; cook 5 more minutes. Set aside to cool.

Make filling: In a bowl, combine sausage, caramelized onions, thyme, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix until fully combined.

Assemble rolls: Cut puff pastry sheet in half lengthwise. Divide filling into two logs and place along the center of each strip.

Roll and seal: Fold pastry over the filling, seal the edge, and place seam-side down on baking sheet.

Brush and top: Brush tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.

Bake: Bake 25–30 minutes until golden and cooked through.

Serve: Cool slightly before slicing into servings. Serve warm.

Notes

Use store-bought sausage links with casings removed for convenience.

Prepare filling a day ahead to save time.

For a cheesy version, add shredded cheddar or mozzarella to the filling.

Freeze unbaked rolls for up to 3 months—bake from frozen with extra time.
