Description
This irresistible chocolate orange yule log recipe delivers a soft cocoa sponge, zesty orange flavor, and rich chocolate ganache for the perfect festive holiday dessert.
Ingredients
For the Ganache
200 g dark chocolate (milk chocolate may be used for a sweeter taste)
150 g double cream (or heavy cream)
75 g butter (dairy-free butter for a vegan option)
For the Sponge
3 eggs (egg substitutes may be used)
75 g plain flour (gluten-free flour works well)
50 g unsweetened cocoa powder
Zest of 1 orange
For the Buttercream
200 g icing sugar (or sugar substitute)
1 tsp orange extract
1 tbsp milk (or plant-based milk)
Orange food coloring (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Ganache
Heat the double cream and butter gently in a saucepan until just warm. Remove from heat, add the chopped chocolate, and allow it to sit for 2–3 minutes. Stir until smooth and glossy. Set aside to cool and thicken.
Make the Sponge
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Whip the eggs and sugar together until thick, pale, and fluffy (about 5–7 minutes). Gently fold in the sieved flour, cocoa powder, and orange zest. Pour into a lined baking tin and bake for 10 minutes, until set but soft.
Shape the Sponge
While still warm, remove the sponge from the oven and carefully roll it up with the baking paper. Leave to cool completely to prevent cracking.
Prepare the Buttercream
Whip the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the icing sugar, orange extract, milk, and food coloring (if using) until smooth and airy.
Assemble the Yule Log
Gently unroll the cooled sponge. Spread an even layer of orange buttercream over the surface, then roll it back up tightly.
Apply the Ganache
Spread the cooled ganache over the rolled sponge. Use a fork to create a bark-like texture if desired. Chill briefly to set before serving.
Notes
Allow ganache to cool to a spreadable consistency before applying.
Garnish with fresh orange slices, grated chocolate, or powdered sugar for a festive finish.
This dessert can be made a day ahead and refrigerated until serving.
