Description
Crispy fried mozzarella sticks coated in spicy Nashville hot seasoning, served with creamy buttermilk ranch—perfect for game day or a fiery snack.
Ingredients
For the Mozzarella Sticks:
12 mozzarella sticks (string cheese, unwrapped and halved if preferred)
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon hot sauce
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups seasoned breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon Nashville hot seasoning or cayenne pepper blend
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Buttermilk Ranch (Optional):
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons sour cream
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or parsley
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Place the mozzarella sticks in the freezer for at least 30 minutes until firm.
In one bowl, mix buttermilk and hot sauce. In three separate bowls, set up flour, whisked eggs, and a seasoned breadcrumb mixture with breadcrumbs, Nashville hot seasoning, garlic powder, and paprika.
Dredge each frozen mozzarella stick in flour, dip in the egg, then the buttermilk mixture, and coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs. For extra crunch, double-dip in egg and breadcrumbs.
Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks for an additional 15 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
Fry the sticks in batches for 1 to 2 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
For the ranch dipping sauce, whisk together all ingredients until smooth and chill until ready to serve.
Serve the Nashville Hot Mozzarella Sticks with buttermilk ranch dipping sauce.
Notes
Use panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
Swap Nashville hot seasoning for cayenne pepper or smoked paprika for a different heat level.
Add parmesan to the breadcrumb mixture for extra flavor.
For a dairy-free version, use vegan cheese and dairy-free ranch dressing.
Fresh herbs like cilantro or chives add a unique twist to the ranch sauce.
