Description
This Paprikash with Egg Noodles (Hungarian) is a comforting classic, loaded with tender chicken, creamy paprika sauce, and buttery noodles. A warm, authentic dish perfect for cozy dinners and easy weeknight meals.
Ingredients
1 ½ lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
2 tablespoons butter (divided)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons Hungarian sweet paprika
½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups chicken broth
1 cup sour cream
Salt and black pepper, to taste
8 oz wide egg noodles
1 tablespoon butter (for noodles)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Cook the Chicken:
Heat 1 tbsp butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned and cooked through (5–6 minutes). Remove and set aside.
Sauté the Onions:
In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tbsp butter and chopped onion. Cook for 5 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
Add Paprika and Flour:
Reduce heat to medium. Stir in sweet paprika and optional smoked paprika. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute.
Build the Sauce:
Slowly add chicken broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly.
Combine and Simmer:
Return chicken to the pan and simmer on low for 10–12 minutes to blend flavors.
Add the Sour Cream:
Remove pan from heat. Temper sour cream with a few spoonfuls of hot sauce, then stir into the skillet. Mix well. Do not boil.
Cook the Noodles:
Boil salted water. Cook egg noodles according to package, then drain and toss with 1 tbsp butter.
Serve:
Plate chicken paprikash over buttered egg noodles. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
Use authentic Hungarian paprika for best flavor.
Add a splash of white wine or a pinch of caraway seeds for a deeper flavor profile.
For extra richness, stir in heavy cream along with sour cream.
Works well with chicken thighs for a juicier version.
Leftovers keep well and taste even better the next day!
