Description

Juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melty cheese, and crispy rye bread come together in this classic patty melt—made even better with a crave-worthy secret sauce.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 large onion, thinly sliced

8 slices rye bread

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices cheddar cheese

Butter, for grilling

Salt and pepper, to taste

Secret Sauce

1/2 cup mayonnaise

2 Tbsp ketchup

1 Tbsp sweet pickle relish

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Set aside.

Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 Tbsp butter. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deep golden and caramelized (15–20 minutes). Remove and set aside.

Cook the Patties: Divide ground beef into 4 thin patties. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, until fully cooked. Remove and set aside.

Assemble the Patty Melts: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices, butter-side down, on a skillet or griddle. Top each with:

1 slice Swiss cheese

1 cooked patty

Caramelized onions

1 slice cheddar cheese

1 slice of bread, butter-side up

Grill: Cook sandwiches over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted.

Serve: Let rest for 1 minute. Slice and serve with secret sauce on the side or drizzled over the sandwich.

Notes

Variations:

Use ground turkey or plant-based patties for a lighter or vegetarian option.

Swap in pepper jack, provolone, or mozzarella cheese based on your preference.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve with fries, sweet potato fries, a side salad, coleslaw, or a pickle spear.
