Description
Packed with savory sausage, sweet peppers, and caramelized onions, this stromboli is a flavor-packed twist on Italian comfort food.
Ingredients
1 pound Italian sausage (mild or hot), casing removed
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Marinara or pizza sauce, for dipping
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a skillet, heat olive oil and cook sausage until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, sauté peppers and onions until softened, about 5–7 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
On a floured surface, roll out pizza dough into a large rectangle (about 10×14 inches).
Spread sausage, peppers, onions, and both cheeses evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
Roll the dough lengthwise like a jelly roll, sealing the edges and tucking the ends. Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush with egg wash and cut a few slits on top for steam to escape.
Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before slicing.
Serve with warm marinara or pizza sauce for dipping.
Notes
Use hot sausage for extra heat or swap in turkey sausage for a lighter version.
Add mushrooms or spinach for extra veggies.
Stromboli can be assembled ahead and refrigerated before baking.
