Description
These warm, tender apples are slow-cooked to perfection with cozy spices and a sweet glaze – just like the Cracker Barrel favorite!
Ingredients
3–4 lbs apples (such as Fuji, Gala, or Golden Delicious), peeled and sliced into wedges
2 tbsp cornstarch
½ cup brown sugar
¼ cup granulated sugar
1½ tsp ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
¼ cup butter, sliced
½ cup apple juice or water
1 tbsp lemon juice
Instructions
Prepare Apples:
Peel and slice apples into uniform wedges. Place them into the slow cooker.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a small bowl, combine cornstarch, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Mix well and sprinkle over the apples.
Add Liquids & Butter:
Pour in apple juice (or water) and lemon juice. Place slices of butter evenly over the top.
Cook:
Cover and cook on LOW for 3–4 hours, or until apples are tender but not mushy. Stir gently halfway through cooking if desired.
Thicken Sauce (Optional):
If you’d like a thicker glaze, remove apples with a slotted spoon and set aside. Turn the slow cooker to HIGH and let the sauce simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until thickened. Return apples to the slow cooker and stir to coat.
Serve:
Serve warm as a side dish, over pancakes or waffles, or with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Notes
Apple Variety: Choose firm, sweet-tart apples that hold their shape (e.g., Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp).
Make Ahead: Great for meal prep or potlucks—store in the fridge and reheat before serving.
Serving Suggestions: Pair with pork chops, serve over oatmeal, or top with whipped cream or ice cream.
