Description

These easy, saucy Sloppy Joes are packed with bold flavor, melted cheddar, and sautéed veggies—perfect for a fast and satisfying weeknight dinner.


Ingredients

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small yellow onion, diced (or ½ of a large onion)

1 large green bell pepper, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean recommended)

1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

¼ teaspoon black pepper

4 slices cheddar cheese

4 hamburger buns


Instructions

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add ground beef, onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for 8–10 minutes, breaking up beef, until browned and vegetables are soft. Drain excess grease.

Stir in tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, cider vinegar, chili powder, salt, smoked paprika, and black pepper. Scrape up any browned bits.

Bring mixture to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens.

If too thick, add a splash of water. If too thin, simmer uncovered longer.

Optional: Toast hamburger buns for extra texture.

Place a slice of cheddar cheese on each bun bottom, then spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the buns. Serve immediately.

Notes

Spice level: Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for more heat.

Mild version: Reduce chili powder as needed.

Topping idea: Add coleslaw or pickles for crunch and contrast.
